The beautiful West Coast of Scotland is my primary source of inspiration. And in particular that moment when the sun begins to fall behind the hills and islands.
As an artist I am always looking at buildings and skylines when walking around a city. The narrow lanes, details, sharp angles and contrasts of light and shade are endlessly fascinating.

Light and, more specifically, its interaction with clouds, water & architecture is what inspires me. Starting with an almost black canvas I slowly tease out the subject as if illuminating the scene. The ethereal qualities of charcoal & oil capture this perfectly, a romantic haze of light & dark.
Artists such as Gerhard Richter, Casper David Friedrich and Edward Hopper first introduced me to the romance of tone and the importance of drawing, qualities which I believe are of greater importance today than ever before.
As well as forging a successful career as an artist I am also a Director of Roger Billcliffe Gallery, Scotland's largest private gallery. This is where you will find me most Monday's to Friday's.
