The beautiful West Coast of Scotland is my primary source of inspiration. And in particular that moment when the sun begins to fall behind the hills and islands.
It is a time for contemplation, reflection and introspection. A moment to relax, unburden and exhale.
A beautiful mix of melancholy and hope.
I can feel a sense of loneliness and isolation when out in the moonlight - even when in the city. The surrounding darkness offering little distraction from my own thoughts. But there is also a feeling of serenity and calmness. The moon offering guidance and focus.

Light and, more specifically, its interaction with clouds, water & architecture is what inspires me. Starting with an almost black canvas I slowly tease out the subject as if illuminating the scene. The ethereal qualities of charcoal & oil capture this perfectly, a romantic haze of light & dark.
Artists such as Gerhard Richter, Casper David Friedrich and Edward Hopper first introduced me to the romance of tone and the importance of drawing, qualities which I believe are of greater importance today than ever before.
